Canicular Days (Golden, British Columbia)

Novio

There’s always a huge relief when summer is around the corner. Vacation plans, Rage Weekends, Union Sundays, Stampede (yearly religion for Calgarians), Tanning, you name it. Spring/Summer, probably the best time of the year that is for the outdoor enthusiasts. A couple of months back, we were dreaming of this over exposed days, now the long-waited December-to-March is gone.

“Nothing brings more joy than the Canicular Days”

…. it’s finally here

“What’s your summer plan?” I would probably not hesitate to describe my fantasy summer plan (blatant lie) knowing full well I am going to spend my 98% of my summer working and the remaining 2% being unproductive.

There are a few things that make up a Calgary summer and the stampede is the pinnacle. I must say, I am looking forward to the Calgary stampede, it is going to be my first time attending. Considering the fact I am African, the only stampede I am aware of is the one at your local markets or the ones for gas at gas stations due to artificial scarcity created by the Nigerian government. I guess that’s equivalent to the queue in stores during Black Friday or Cyber Monday in Canada (Maybe).

I am not the biggest fan of the cowboy and country music lifestyle, in all honesty I don’t like it but apparently it’s really exciting and I am willing to give it a shot or not?

I am a homebody (person who enjoys spending time at home). Don’t get me mistaken, I still enjoy going out and hanging with friends but sporadically it becomes boring.  Planning is very effortless but executing the blueprint tends to be the major drawback but that’s not the gist.

Before I signed off for the summer and head back to the books, I decided to make a trip down to Golden, British Columbia to relax and thus the highlight of my season so far.  I drove down for the weekend mainly to go out my comfort zone and try something new (and I got to do it with someone special). It’s about a 3 hour drive from Calgary.

The sceneries were breathtaking

The Glacier Mountaineer Lodge of Golden is framed by the range of mounters and is the aesthetic Albertan vibe you want from any hotel with the proximity to hiking trails as far as you can throw. The times I’ve spent in the mountains always have fond memories attached. Back In Banff when I went with my best buddies was my first time (that was back in November). I got some videos and photos from the trip which made me develop an interest in shooting the static mountains. Although spending only a weekend, I must say I did enjoy my stay in the province in general. Our visit was mainly at the lodge where we spent a weekend just exploring the town and taking in the cabin house architecture. Also visiting the different entries, you don’t want to miss the food at Peak’s grill, Double Black Café & Winston Bar & Bistro.  It was everything that you wanted. The weather was really not as cold as I expected; it’s warmer than what you would expect from a Mountain area but I ,just say it gets pretty chilly at night (that’s were the hot tub and dry sauna come to use).

In terms of facilities and service, I didn’t find it to be a problem in any way with so many fun things to do your biggest problem would be getting outside your room (that’s if you’re me) but I did find the absence of room service a bit of a hassle but all in all it was worth the weekend.
